Valley View High School

National Honor Society Selection Process

1. All students in grade eight receive a letter which informs them about the National Honor Society. In addition, the details are explained by a guidance counselor during a class assembly in grade nine.

2. During the opening day of school each student in the Grades 9-10-11-12 receives a student planner which contains a section which explains the National Honor Society selection criteria.

3. At the end of the second quarter of the first semester, a guidance counselor examines the cumulative average for students in grades 10-11-12. A 90.00 cumulative average (as calculated by the computer center) is necessary for a student to be eligible for consideration. The student cannot have any school suspensions for the current school year.

4. Students who meet the 90.00 cumulative average and have no school suspensions for the current school year are then notified that they are eligible to become members of the National Honor Society.

5. After the notification process is completed, each student who is eligible is given a National Honor Society activity sheet. This form must be completed with information about school activities, community activities, character, and leadership qualities. The application must be returned by March 4, 2003 to Mrs. Kresock. Those students who do not return the application by the due date are no longer considered for selection to the National Honor Society during the current school year.

6. All student applications are presented to the faculty selection committee for consideration.

7. Names of students who are selected are given to the High School Principal. Notifications of acceptance are mailed from the High School Office.

8. If selected, students meet with the National Honor Society Moderators who explain in detail the obligations of membership. Students are asked to sign a form along with their parent or guardian confirming their understanding of their obligations to the National Honor Society.

9. Names of non-selected students are given to the Moderators. Each non-selected student meets with one of the Moderators and the reasons for non-selection are explained to them. They are also informed of the appeals process that they can request if they wish their application to be reviewed by the Appeals Committee.

Additional Selection Information

Selection of the National Honor Society is based on scholarship, character, leadership, and service. To be eligible for membersip consideration, the student must have a cumulative average of 90 and no school suspensions for the current year. Leadership and service are based on the student's participation in school and community activities, and elected or appointed leadership positions. In order to be eligible to apply for admission to the National Honor Society, students must be active participants in 2 school-based and 2 community-based activities per year. Only those activities that have taken place during the students' high school career (grades 9-12) will be considered for evaluation.

Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics, and co-operation with both students and faculty. Therefore, any student who has been suspended during the current year will not be eligible to apply. Selection for membership is done by a faculty committee. In order to remain a member of the National Honor Society once inducted, students must not be suspended and must attend all meetings and complete all National Honor Society responsibilities in a timely fashion. Failure to do so will lead to immediate dismissal.

Although membership is limited to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, freshmen performance in the four areas mentioned above is a prime consideration for selection. Therefore, freshmen should take advantage of the opportunities such as membership in the many clubs and organizations, athletics, student government, etc. which are available to students at Valley View pursuant to membership in the National Honor Society. A listing of these clubs and organizations can be found in the extracurricular handbook which is available in the high school office and on this website.
