Course Description:
This course is designed to allow III and IV level art students the opportunity to experiment more in-depth, with a variety of 3 Dimensional media such as clay, plaster, wire, found objects, papier mache', wood… Students will concentrate on experimenting with an array of mediums.
--- Ceramics (both hand-building and the wheel) are options for students to focus on creating a series of clay pieces both hand built and/or "thrown" pottery on the wheel, complete with glazes. This will allow students to improve their skills and increase their knowledge of the particular medium's possibilities and limitations. Students will be able to study and gain appreciation for the many cultures, civilizations and artists throughout history, that have created the countless masterpieces that continue to influence and motivate the contemporary artists of today.
---Calder style mobiles (using wire, styrofoam plates, foamcore…)
---Acrylic painted, double-sided canvas banners (e.g. Teacher samples of Van Gogh's Starry Night, Dali's Persistance of Memory, and Munch's The Scream)
---Paper mache' ceremonial masks
--- Henry Moore style wire/plaster figures with experimental faux stone and metal finishes
(Utilizing patina and Rub and Buff)
These are some of the 3-D media options that will be introduced to students taking this course of study.
Students are to complete review questions from the Art in Focus text that correspond to the assigned chapters related to the hands-on projects they are creating in the studio classes. These questions are to be completed by the due dates and will be corrected and counted as quiz grades. Any student failing to hand in these assignments will receive a zero for each incomplete assignment.
*The Art in Focus text allows students the opportunity to study the many periods in the history of art that have affected and inspired artists and their works throughout the ages. This work also motivates and stimulates student ideas and creativity when approaching their own works of art.
POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS on various cultures, civilizations, and artists (for example: Maria Martinez, Pablo Picasso, Robert Arneson,...) that serve to inspire and motivate student creativity will also be required as part of the Ceramics & Sculpture curriculum.
