This course is designed to allow III and IV level
art students the opportunity to experiment more in-depth with color using a variety of 2-D media
(acrylics, tempera, watercolors, ink washes…), concentrating on increasing their knowledge
and developing advanced expertise in technique.
Students will be required to experiment
with a variety of mediums, demonstrating to the teacher that they have gained a sound
understanding of the possibilities and limitations of the particular medium they are utilizing to complete the finished piece. (For example… with ACRYLICS), students
will need to show knowledge of the medium by demonstrating the following techniques:
--- A GLAZE -applying translucent layers of acrylics thinned with polymer, used to create
luminous colors that add depth and richness to a painting
---IMPASTO -a raised, textural
effect created with the use of modeling paste. The paste is applied to the painting surface
in varied thicknesses
--- MODELING -creating subtle, tonal gradations with color, creating an
"illusion of depth" and realism within the composition
--- SCUMBLING- the dragging of a
small amounts of paint across a dry, previously painted area creating a simulated texture
reflective of wood grain, stone,....
Students will need to demonstrate an individual
development in artistic style. By studying an array of art periods, styles and artists
(EXPRESSIONISM, SURREALISM, CUBIM, IMPRESSIONISM,...ex: Van Gogh and Seurat's works
(dots and dashes of pure colors placed next to and on top of each other, will cause the "eye"
to optically mix them into a variety of tones and hues.ex: the eye will see GREEN
when BLUE and YELLOW are placed next to each other).
A variety of painting surfaces will also
be discussed offering students the option to experiment on non-traditional surfaces such as
barnwood, irregular pieces of ceiling tiles, brown kraft paper…as well as the traditional canvas. (students are required to
stretch at least one canvas).
Students in this course are encouraged to develop their creativity by producing original
pieces of artwork that demonstrate a sound understanding of composition, color, design, and
technique. Demonstrating an ability to experiment more in-depth with a variety of
wet/dry media is critical in developing pieces with a heightened level of aesthetic quality.
Students will work on Q&A packets focusing on artists and their works that span as far back
as Ice Age Cave Art and continue throughout the centuries up to modern day art. Stylized and
highly decorative Egyptian Art, the delicate and ornate porcelain ceramics, prints and
screens of the Chinese culture,as well as the stiff, religious paintings of the Medieval
Period serve to help students understand and appreciate the vast amount of artwork that has spanned the ages.
The sophisticated, and intricately detailed masterpieces of the Renaissance become an inspiration
for these students that are developing their artistic talents. Some of the world's greatest
works were created in this period that art historians refer to as "the rebirth of classical
realism." Frescos, oil paintings, sculptures, bronze castings, and ornately carved architecture
by Michelangelo, DaVinci, Raphael, Durer, Botticelli, etc; introduce students to painters,
sculptors, architects and craftsmen, whose skills, knowledge, and desire to create, gave us
The Sistine Chapel, The Pieta', David, Moses, The Last Supper, The Mona Lisa, and countless
other masterpieces.
Impressionism, Expressionism, Abstract Art, Cubism, and other movements
leading up to the Contemporary Art of the 21st Century will also be discussed. This knowledge
will allow students the ability to understand quality, original artwork, encouraging and
motivating them to develop their own individual style.
Students will be taught POWERPOINT in
all the art curriculums and they will be expected to develop art presentations with the
use of this new and innovative technology. The POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS will be shown to the class by students as part of the
learning process. POWERPOINT has proved to be a tremendous tool for introducing information
in a visually effective format.
