VALLEY VIEW HIGH SCHOOL IS IN THE ZONE. THE HEALTHY ZONE!
Valley View High School has been selected for a 2005 Keystone Healthy Zone School mini-grant of $2,000. PANA awarded the grant to Valley View High School for committing to integrate physical activity and nutrition into a total learning environment. One of the largest difficulties facing our nation today is the spiraling health care cost. Most experts advocate that the solution may lie in prevention. Prevention can only be achieved through education. The focus of our teaching will be how to prevent disease through healthy living. This program will equip students with the knowledge they need to be proactive throughout their lives and reduce the risks of self-induced health difficulties. It addresses methods to maintain fitness while equipping them with the ability to monitor progress. This project also encourages students to search beyond the scope of the school-based activities by introducing healthy living habits through the Internet and cross-curricular connections. Students will participate in an evaluation of their personal health habits and create a strategy to improve and maintain fitness and nutrition habits for health living .The Health and Physical. Education Teachers and the Family Consumer Science Teacher will work together to provide the instruction on the physical activity, fitness and nutrition. During the course of the year PANA will sponsor activities. The first activity was "Walk to School Day". Valley View High School students in grades ninth through twelve participated by walking a mile during the day on the Valley View track. The miles were tracked and the students walked a total of 700 miles. This is equivalent to walking across the state of Pennsylvania and back. Our mission was to promote exercise as part of healthy living. Congratulations to all who participated. On behalf of the Physical Education Staff and Family Consumer Science Dept. we would like to thank Pepsi, the Administration, Food Service, Maintenance, our Faculty, and especially our students for making our day successful. Our second activity sponsored by PANA was Apple Crunch Day on October 19, 2005. Students and staff district wide were treated to a variety of apple treats during all of the lunches. Our mission was to promote healthy eating habits. Our Apple Crunch Day was a great success! A special thank you to our food service director, Mr. Keith Gramlich, for making the apple treats for all to enjoy. Here are some memories from the day.
On November 1st, 2005 the Sophomore Health Classes participate in another PANA activity, healthy cooking! The sophomore health students went to the cooking lab to create a healthy dinner. The students work for six classes on learning about nutrients, the food pyramid, food labels, metabolism and food safety. The students worked in groups to create healthy recipes for an appetizer, main course, drink and desert. Each group had a budget of $10 to purchase the groceries needed. The students had to include a budget for their materials. On November 1st the students went to the cooking lab and prepared their portion of the meal. The students had a wonderful learning experience. They learned how to prepare a delicious healthy meal and reaped the rewards by having a sample of each item cooked. It was a delicious lesson. Here are some pictures of our day.
